Katie Clendaniel
State Senate District 37
Katie Clendaniel is the Democratic nominee for Maryland State Senate in District 37, representing Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot, and Wicomico counties. A lifelong Eastern Shore resident, she was raised in Trappe by two longtime educators from local farming families and has deep roots in the Mid-Shore community. Clendaniel has built her career as a nonprofit leader and community advocate, working with local organizations to strengthen communities and expand opportunities for Eastern Shore residents.
Clendaniel is running to bring Democratic representation to District 37 by focusing on the issues she identifies as most important to the region, including strengthening public education, supporting agriculture and watermen, expanding economic opportunity, improving access to health care, and ensuring that rural communities have a strong voice in Annapolis. Her campaign emphasizes practical, collaborative leadership and working across the four-county district to address local challenges while building on the strengths of the Eastern Shore.

Sheree Sample-Hughes
State Delegate District 37A
Sheree Sample-Hughes proudly serves Maryland’s 37A Legislative District representing Dorchester and Wicomico counties in Maryland’s House of Delegates. Sample-Hughes has been serving her community for over 20 years, emphasizing public service, community leadership, and advocacy for the Eastern Shore.
Delegate Sample-Hughes graduated from Delaware State University with a bachelor's degree in public relations, she also earned a master's degree in management and public administration from Wilmington University. She extends her commitments beyond herself to engage in numerous civic and community organizations.
Edmund Barrett
State Delegate District 37B
Edmund Barrett has dedicated his life to public service. A retired U.S. Army Colonel with more than 30 years of military service, he has also
served as a Regional Director for Senator Chris Van Hollen and as a professor at the Naval War College. His career has been grounded in accountability, teamwork, and putting mission before self. On the Eastern Shore, he has continued that commitment as a teacher, youth sports coach, and community advocate, giving him firsthand insight into the challenges facing working families, small businesses, seniors, veterans, and young people across our region.
Barrett is running for office because he believes the government should focus on practical solutions that improve people’s lives. His priorities include fiscal responsibility, public safety, strong schools, economic opportunity, and a better quality of life for Eastern Shore residents. In office, he will focus especially on tackling the affordability and cost-of-living crisis, ensuring reliable and affordable energy, and expanding access to quality healthcare.
Michele W. Johnson
State Delegate District 37B
Michele W. Johnson is an experienced life long public servant, nonprofit leader, and now a Democratic candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates. Michelle is committed to bringing experienced, responsive
leadership to Annapolis while advocating for the families and communities of Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot, and Wicomico counties. Public Service has always been a core part of Johnson’s character, she has worked on several boards, campaigns, administrations and programs.
A first-generation college graduate, Michele earned a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies from the University of Maryland and a Master of Planning from the University of Virginia while working full time. She and her husband, Paul, have been married for more than 40 years and have two adult children. They make their home in Talbot County, where Michele remains deeply engaged in community service and public leadership.
As a candidate for the House of Delegates, Michele is focused on strengthening Eastern Shore communities by supporting quality public education, expanding access to healthcare and affordable housing, creating economic opportunities for small businesses, watermen, and farmers, protecting Maryland's natural resources, and ensuring public servants have the support they need to serve their communities. She is committed to listening, engaging, and delivering results for the people of District 37B.
